PIB Debunks Coal Shortage Claims, Confirms Stable Power Supply in India

Government fact-checking body PIB Fact Check dismissed viral allegations of a catastrophic power crisis on Sunday, stating that there is no coal shortage or system failure in the country and that the reports are false.

A tweet claiming record electricity demand of 277 GW, major coal shortages at thermal facilities, and load-shedding in many regions due to soaring summer temperatures went viral on social media, prompting the explanation.

The Indian government denied the allegations, saying that the country’s electricity grid is stable and has enough supplies. On May 2, 2026, the peak demand reached 229 GW and was completely satisfied.

Reiterating that the generating and distribution systems are operating normally according to established standards, PIB Fact Check stated that such posts are meant to cause needless fear.

The overall stock at thermal power plants is at 53.702 million tonnes of coal, which is more than enough to meet current requirements. The availability of coal was also deemed sufficient.

In response to worries about the reliability and security of the grid during high-demand periods, the administration has pointed out that the defence measures in place for frequency regulation give enough operating margin.

This clarification further demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining consistent power supply nationwide, even when demand varies with the seasons.
