An important step in modernising railway connections in the Northeast has been taken by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) in their increased efforts to establish regular electric train services between Tripura and Assam. Until commercial services start, Electric Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) trains are now running trial runs.
During the testing, electric multiple-engine train units (MEMUs) with six to eight coaches are running between Agartala, Dharmanagar, Sabroom, and Karimganj. The overhead electrification system, voltage levels, and other technical characteristics are being continuously monitored by railway engineers to guarantee safe and reliable operations before final permission is granted.
This comes after the 271 km of broad-gauge railway in Tripura, which was electrified entirely by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd. (TSECL). Electric train services, which are cleaner and more efficient than diesel-powered operations, are to replace them in 2022 as part of the electrification project, which cost Rs 46 crore.
Agartala was linked in 2008, Sabroom in 2019, and the Agartala-Akhaura international rail link with Bangladesh will be finished in 2023, marking a substantial expansion of rail connectivity in Tripura during the past few decades. As part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, the federal government has renovated the train stations at Agartala, Udaipur, Kumarghat, and Dharmanagar.
The first electric goods train performed well between Badarpur and Jirania, while the obligatory electric locomotive trial runs between Agartala and Arunachal Junction in Assam have also been accomplished, according to railway officials. Before regular passenger services begin, more testing runs are scheduled.
As electrification draws to a close, NFR is getting ready to enhance rail connectivity in the Northeast by extending Vande Bharat Express services to Agartala and Silchar. The effort is anticipated to make travel more comfortable, less time-consuming, and operationally efficient for both freight services and people.
A significant improvement to Tripura’s railway network, electrified train services would boost regional connectivity with India’s increasing electrified rail corridor and make travel more sustainable.
