Both Finland and India are optimistic that the proposed EU-India Free Trade Agreement (EU-India FTA) will increase bilateral trade by 2030, and they have thus decided to deepen their economic and strategic cooperation. These talks were part of a series of high-level engagements that Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had with Finnish government officials and business executives during his visit to Helsinki.
A variety of topics were discussed during his discussion with Riikka Purra, Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, including increasing trade diversification, investment, and cooperation in new technology. Reportedly, Purra stated that the future of bilateral trade between India and Finland might be brighter in the next five years thanks to the planned EU-India Free Trade Agreement and the India-Finland strategic collaboration in digitisation and sustainability.
Noting that India’s fast economic growth and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are very congruent, Riikka Purra emphasised Finland’s competence in digital technology, clean energy, and sustainable solutions. She went on to say that India is a trustworthy long-term strategic partner, and that she would like to see more cooperation in areas like space, military, and other vital technology.
The two nations deliberated bolstering economic and financial relations, improving trade and investment, and increasing cooperation in digitalisation and high-tech areas, according to Piyush Goyal, who shared details of the talks on social media. He subsequently met with Sakari Puisto, Finland’s Minister of Economic Affairs, and the two heads of state discussed potential partnerships in the fields of sustainability, space technology, artificial intelligence (AI), 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and quantum computing.
Sakari Puisto stressed that Finnish enterprises in both established and new technology fields can benefit greatly from India’s fast growing market. New investment opportunities and business collaborations might be created for enterprises from both India and the European Union, he said, thanks to the proposed free trade agreement between the two nations.
Meeting with top executives from prominent Finnish technology and industrial businesses, Piyush Goyal urged them to increase their presence in India through the establishment of new manufacturing facilities, R&D centers, and export-oriented production. In the long run, this outreach will help India achieve its goal of becoming a global manufacturing and innovation powerhouse by luring investment from around the world.
