Rapid response to maritime crises has been bolstered by the successful completion of a complex and risky operation by the Indian Navy to collect and safely dispose of an unexploded missile warhead from the crude oil tanker MT Olympic Life.
Off the coast of Oman on May 26, 2026, the tanker using the flag of the Marshall Islands—which did not contain any Indian nationals—reported an explosion in its hull while sailing from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates to Kochi. The ship persisted in its journey to Kochi after the event and subsequently notified the authorities of the unexploded explosive device’s existence.
The Indian Navy swiftly launched a coordinated response after receiving information through the Information Fusion Centre – Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR). To evaluate the situation and eliminate the danger, a specialised Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) crew was sent out by the Kochi-based Southern Naval Command.
A bullet had pierced the ship’s hull, made its way through many structural compartments, and became stuck within a gasoline storage tank, as revealed by the EOD team during the examination. The ship, its crew, and the port infrastructure were all in grave danger due to the presence of the unexploded missile warhead in the highly sensitive region.
The threat was so great that the Indian Navy proceeded with great planning and in stages. After following all the necessary safety procedures, experts used cutting-edge diagnostic tools to pinpoint the warhead’s detonation mechanism and isolate it before removing it.
Without inflicting any additional harm to the tanker, the Navy skilfully extracted the missile warhead and its accompanying debris. The discovered ordnance has already been moved to a safe place where it will be stored and examined in detail by experts.
The Indian Navy’s proficiency in EOD, maritime security operations, and coordinating with other agencies is on full display in this mission. Additionally, it highlights India’s dedication to protecting international trade lanes and efficiently handling maritime catastrophes.
Thanks to their unwavering support for vessels of all nationalities and ownership, the Indian Navy has proven once again that it is a reliable partner in maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region.
