India to Launch First Bullet Train in Phases Starting August 15, 2027

Phased operations will begin on August 15, 2027, according to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, marking a significant milestone in India’s first bullet train project. Starting on the 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) route between Surat and Bilimora, the first service will run, kicking off the age of high-speed rail in India.

To facilitate early passenger services prior to the complete completion of the route, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor will be commissioned in numerous segments. Additional sections, such as Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and Ahmedabad-Mumbai, would be opened in stages after the Surat-Bilimora segment becomes operational.

Rapid progress in construction has resulted in the completion of over 80% of the project, according to the Railway Minister. Travel time between Ahmedabad and Mumbai is expected to be drastically reduced thanks to the high-speed rail project, which is also expected to introduce world-class train technology and improve passenger convenience.

In addition to improving connectivity, drawing investment, producing job opportunities, and promoting economic growth in Gujarat and Maharashtra, the bullet train route is anticipated to enhance regional development. It stands as a testament to the ambitious nature of India’s transport infrastructure projects.

Additionally, Vaishnaw shared the government’s plans to extend the high-speed rail network via three lines that would converge on Hyderabad in the future. In order to enhance connectivity across southern and western India, plans are afoot to construct additional bullet trains along lines such as Hyderabad-Mumbai, Hyderabad-Chennai, and Hyderabad-Bengaluru.

The minister of railways went on to tout the government’s railway modernisation scheme, the Nav-Nirmaan initiative, which involves redeveloping 261 railway stations. Modern infrastructure and better passenger amenities are being installed at several main stations in Telangana, including Secunderabad, Begumpet, and HITEC City.
