India Seychelles relations have received fresh momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic address to the National Assembly of Seychelles, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said.
Birla made the remarks during a bilateral parliamentary dialogue with Seychelles National Assembly Speaker Azarel Yolanda Ernesta and a parliamentary delegation in New Delhi.
PM Modi’s Seychelles Address Marks Historic Moment
Birla said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the Seychelles legislature was a historic moment. Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to address the National Assembly of Seychelles.
Birla said the visit reaffirmed the warmth and depth of the partnership between the two countries. He also called for stronger cooperation between the two Parliaments.
India and Seychelles are marking 50 years of Seychelles’ independence and five decades of diplomatic relations.
India and Seychelles Explore New Areas of Cooperation
The two sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in digital transformation, health, infrastructure and renewable energy.
Birla highlighted India’s experience with parliamentary digitalisation. He said India could share its expertise with Seychelles in areas such as digital transformation and capacity building.
He also highlighted the role of the Parliamentary Research and Training Institute for Democracies (PRIDE) in providing specialised programmes on legislative drafting and parliamentary procedures.
Focus on Parliamentary and People-to-People Ties
Birla called for deeper parliamentary cooperation and stronger cultural, educational and tourism exchanges.
He also invited members of the Seychelles National Assembly to visit India and emphasised the long-standing civilisational, cultural and people-to-people links between the two countries.
Ernesta thanked Birla for the hospitality and highlighted her long-standing association with India. She also praised India’s progress in parliamentary digitalisation and technology adoption.
India-Seychelles Partnership in Indian Ocean
Birla described Seychelles as a trusted and valued partner in the Indian Ocean region.
He highlighted the importance of Seychelles under Vision MAHASAGAR and called for closer cooperation to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity.
He also said India and Seychelles could work together to strengthen the voice and aspirations of the Global South through the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
India Seychelles Relations Set for Deeper Cooperation
The parliamentary dialogue highlighted the expanding India Seychelles relations across democracy, technology, capacity building, culture and regional development.
Both sides expressed support for deeper engagement and continued cooperation across these areas, further strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Seychelles.
