India has achieved 50% of its electricity capacity from non-fossil fuels, surpassing its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) goal five years early.
The country has also established a carbon sink of 2.29 billion tonnes CO2 equivalent from forest cover. In 2020, India’s net greenhouse gas emissions were 2,437 million tonnes CO2 equivalent, a 7.93% reduction from 2019.
This decline is primarily due to decreased emissions in energy and industrial sectors. India’s updated NDC aims for a 45% reduction in emissions intensity of GDP by 2030 and plans for net-zero emissions by 2070 through a comprehensive Long-Term Low-Carbon Development Strategy.
