IGL Showcases Sustainable CNG Recompression Technology

Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has received recognition for its case study on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) recompression at the National Sustainability Conference organised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) in association with GAIL (India) Limited.

The initiative highlights IGL’s focus on adopting practical, technology-driven solutions to improve operational efficiency, optimise resource utilisation, and support sustainable practices across the natural gas distribution sector.

The two-day conference, held at GAIL’s Vijaipur facility in Madhya Pradesh, brought together senior industry executives, regulatory representatives and sustainability experts to discuss environmentally responsible business practices and emerging solutions for India’s oil and gas industry.

IGL’s case study focused on CNG recompression, an approach aimed at recovering and reutilising natural gas that might otherwise be released during certain operational processes. Such initiatives can minimise gas losses, improve resource efficiency, and help reduce methane emissions.

The recognition comes as the Indian oil and gas industry places increasing emphasis on reducing its environmental footprint while maintaining operational reliability and economic efficiency.

A key highlight of the conference was the release of the Compendium of Successful Case Studies 2.0, which showcases practical sustainability initiatives and encourages knowledge-sharing among industry stakeholders.

The discussions also addressed methane emissions, energy conservation, responsible resource management and the importance of integrating sustainability into everyday business operations.

For city gas distribution companies such as IGL, innovative technologies and improved operational practices are becoming increasingly important as natural gas infrastructure expands to serve a growing consumer base.

IGL has been actively strengthening its sustainability initiatives through improved monitoring, operational efficiencies and measures aimed at supporting India’s cleaner energy transition.

The recognition of its CNG recompression case study reinforces the importance of industry-led innovation in advancing environmental responsibility and developing more efficient natural gas distribution systems.

As India works toward its long-term energy security and sustainability objectives, such initiatives show how practical technological improvements can support resource conservation, operational excellence, and a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
