Hindustan Copper Capital Investment Taps CODELCO Partnership

Hindustan Copper Capital Investment plans have taken shape for the next five to six years. State-owned Hindustan Copper Limited (HCL) announced the plan on Tuesday. The figure exceeds Rs 7,000 crore. Exploration, mine revivals and strategic partnerships form the core of this expansion drive.

HCL disclosed the plan through a regulatory filing. The company said it has taken several strategic initiatives across the copper and critical minerals segment. The capital investment plan builds directly on these steps.

Why This Investment Matters Now

India’s copper demand is rising fast. Infrastructure expansion drives part of that growth. Renewable energy adds more. Electric mobility and other clean-energy applications push demand further still. Against this backdrop, HCL’s investment push carries added weight.

Hindustan Copper Capital Investment Backed by Growing Reserves

HCL has added 135.52 million tonnes of copper ore reserves and resources over the past three years. This addition points to a steady improvement in the company’s resource base. It also strengthens the foundation for the planned investment.

The company is actively pursuing new copper deposits. This search spans both domestic and overseas locations. A key part of the strategy involves reopening closed mines across India. This step aims to ramp up domestic production directly.

Global and Domestic Partnerships Take Shape

Hindustan Copper announced a collaboration with CODELCO, Chile’s state-owned copper company. The partnership targets capacity building, knowledge sharing and technical cooperation. Mining, beneficiation and exploration all fall within its scope.

On the domestic front, HCL has signed multiple memoranda of understanding. Partners include RITES, Indian Oil Corporation, Coal India, Oil India and GAIL. These agreements aim to expand HCL’s mining footprint. They also support India’s broader mineral security goals.

HCL’s Position in India’s Copper Sector

HCL stands as the sole vertically integrated producer of refined copper in India. Its capabilities span mining, ore beneficiation, smelting, refining and extrusion of copper rods. The company holds every operating mining lease for copper ore in the country. It controls access to about 45 per cent of India’s copper ore reserves and resources.

Hindustan Copper’s combined resources and reserves stand at 767.37 million tonnes. The company’s market capitalisation stood at Rs 51,619 crore at the time of the announcement.
