Government data submitted to Parliament shows that India’s renewable energy capacity has increased by a factor of four in the last decade, and will reach 288.58 GW by June 30, 2026. India is rapidly shifting to more environmentally friendly energy sources, and this phenomenal growth is a reflection of that.
The country’s greatest renewable energy source, with an installed capacity of 162.15 GW, is solar power, according to Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, who informed the Rajya Sabha. Next on the list are hydropower (57.24 GW), biopower (11.75 GW), and wind power (57.44 GW).
Indian renewable energy has contributed 288.58 GW and nuclear power 8.78 GW to the country’s total non-fossil fuel electricity capacity of 297.36 GW, according to the minister, highlighting the country’s clean energy goals.
Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) totalling USD 45.72 billion was directed towards India’s renewable energy sector from FY2014 to FY2026. Renewable energy projects around the nation have also received funding of Rs 12.32 lakh crore from domestic financial institutions.
With 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity targeted for 2030, the Indian government claims the country is on pace to meet its objective. The development of more robust transmission networks, green hydrogen, battery storage, pumped hydro, and offshore wind will be the primary goals of future expansion in the clean energy sector. An increasing proportion of India’s record peak power demand—256 GW—now comes from renewable sources, making this type of energy increasingly important to the country’s power sector.
The fast increase in renewable energy capacity in India is a reflection of the country’s dedication to clean energy, energy independence, and the attainment of lofty climate targets in the service of long-term economic prosperity.
