Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the first Vande Bharat sleeper train will commence operations between Guwahati in Assam and Howrah in West Bengal this January.
The complete trial, testing, and certification have been finalized, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to inaugurate the train. This development marks a significant milestone for Indian Railways and intends to introduce major reforms in 2026, focusing on passenger-centric initiatives. Benefiting districts include Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam and multiple regions in West Bengal.
The train will comprise 16 coaches, including 11 three-tier and 4 two-tier AC coaches, accommodating approximately 823 passengers, with a maximum design speed of 180 kmph. Features include ergonomically designed berths, automatic doors, CCTVs in every coach, and a new bogie with enhanced suspension. Passengers will experience comfortable overnight journeys, with scheduled departures in the evening and arrivals the next morning. Culinary offerings will reflect regional flavors, serving Assamese cuisine from Guwahati and Bengali delicacies from Kolkata.
Safety features include the modern KAVACH safety device, an emergency communication unit, and an improved fire detection and suppression system in electric cabinets and lavatories, ensuring a high-quality travel experience.
