Buddha Relics Reach Ulaanbaatar, Deepening India-Mongolia Cultural and Spiritual Relations

The spiritual and cultural links between India and Mongolia will be strengthened when, from June 1 to 10, 2026, the Ganden Monastery in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, hosts an exhibition of the Holy Relics of Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana, two of Buddha’s primary pupils.

A joint effort by New Delhi’s National Museum, the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), and the Ministry of Culture is putting on the exhibition.

During Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa’s State visit to India in October 2025, both countries reaffirmed their common Buddhist heritage and longstanding civilisational relations, which led to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement.

In Buddhist traditions, the relics of Arahant Sariputta and Arahant Mahamoggallana—two of Gautama Buddha’s most distinguished disciples—are treasured as representations of enlightenment, spiritual attainment, and the maintenance of Buddha Dhamma.

Relics symbolise the realised Sangha and the passing down and protection of Buddhist teachings from one generation to the next, as stated by the IBC.

This exposition expands upon previous cultural interactions between the two countries. After a nearly 30-year absence, the revered Kapilavastu Relics of the Buddha made their long-awaited return to Mongolia in 2022 for an 11-day public exhibition.

The next exhibition, according to officials, will strengthen historic people-to-people and cultural ties while giving Mongolia a concrete spiritual link to the early Buddhist Sangha.

India and Mongolia have traditionally characterised their relationship as deeply Buddhist and spiritual, and the two nations are actively working to further their partnership via legacy exchanges and cultural diplomacy.
