Big Gas Push: BPCL to Invest ₹25,000 Crore to Supercharge City Gas Network Across India

A significant push into city gas infrastructure has been launched by state-owned energy giant Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), which wants to invest 25,000 crore over the next five years to develop its City Gas Distribution (CGD) operations throughout India.

Rahul Tandon, BPCL’s Business Head for Gas, made the announcement while addressing reporters outside of India Energy Week 2026 in Goa.

According to Mr Tandon, BPCL has invested almost 8,000 crore so far in 26 operating geographical areas, demonstrating the company’s substantial success in developing its gas network. The planned capital infusion will be used to reinforce CNG transportation infrastructure, expand residential and business connections, and expedite pipeline rollout.

“We are confident of scaling up much faster,” Tandon stated, adding that BPCL’s development plans closely match the Prime Minister’s Viksit Bharat vision and the long-term energy transformation goals of the Indian government. A key component of India’s clean energy plan is city gas distribution, which aims to increase the usage of compressed natural gas (CNG) for automobiles and piped natural gas (PNG) for homes and businesses. It is anticipated that BPCL’s increased investment will increase access to cleaner fuel sources, especially in urban and rapidly expanding semi-urban areas.

As the demand for natural gas continues to grow, BPCL is putting itself in a position to support less reliance on more polluting fossil fuels while bolstering supply reliability. It is anticipated that the company’s expanding CGD footprint will help large cities reduce carbon emissions and improve air quality.

One of the major public sector participants in India’s gas ecosystem, BPCL keeps expanding its infrastructure to fulfil future energy demands while striking a balance between affordability, sustainability, and energy security.
