Arunachal Pradesh, Norwegian Firm Ink MoU to Advance Clean Power Generation

On Tuesday, officials from the government of Arunachal Pradesh and the Norwegian company Tidal Sail AS signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to launch a project to harness the clean power of river currents.

Supported by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and Innovation Norway under the India-Norway Green Partnership, the 500 KW River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Project will be carried out by the state’s Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies (CES&HS).

They claim that it will use Norwegian technology to build India’s first River Kinetic Energy Demonstration Plant, which will harness river currents to produce clean power without the need for extensive civil infrastructure.

Attendees included Norway’s ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, who highlighted how Arunachal Pradesh’s distinctive river systems provide a perfect setting for cutting-edge river kinetic technology to be tested.

Norway and the frontier state are working together more closely in other important areas, such as sustainable infrastructure development, geotechnical engineering, and geothermal energy, as Stener pointed out.

The project is a strategic move toward expanding the use of renewable energy sources in the state and bringing decentralised power solutions to underserved areas, according to Tana Tage, director of CES&HS.
