AI-Powered Cyber Attacks on the Rise, CERT-In Flags ‘Mythos’ Risk

CERT-In, India’s central cybersecurity body, has issued a high-severity alert, stating that the cyber threat landscape is being radically reshaped by the rapid breakthroughs in frontier artificial intelligence. This has raised additional concerns throughout the technological industry.

According to CERT-In’s advise “Defending Against Frontier AI Driven Cyber Risks,” attackers are able to act with unprecedented speed, scale, and autonomy due to the increasing sophistication of next-generation AI systems.

Insiders in the business are expressing concern about the disruptive and unpredictable powers of cutting-edge AI models, which they are referring to as “Mythos jitters.” This warning comes at a time when such worries are rampant.

The government claims that cutting-edge AI systems can now detect security holes in popular apps, sift through mountains of source code, and launch sophisticated cyberattacks with little to no human oversight.

This is very different from the old cyber threats, which usually needed a lot of human skill and cooperation.

Such AI-driven tools, according to CERT-In’s warning, can enable attackers to conduct end-to-end penetration tests of company networks by chaining flaws across different platforms.

These tools augment the accuracy and impact of assaults while automating reconnaissance, exploitation, and lateral movement, drastically reducing the barrier to entry for cybercriminals.

Micro, small, and medium-sized businesses (MSMEs) are at a higher risk of cyberattacks because they lack adequate cybersecurity infrastructure and resources, according to the report.

In order to bolster their defences, these businesses were recommended to implement advanced threat detection systems, enable continuous network monitoring, and retain extensive records of system activity for effective forensic analysis.

Amid the increasing velocity of vulnerability discovery and exploitation, CERT-In emphasised the need for effective patch management and prompt disclosure procedures.

The report said that in a security landscape dominated by artificial intelligence, putting off fixing software vulnerabilities might leave organisations much more vulnerable to attacks.

The agency also underscored the importance of secure coding standards and regular security audits, recommending that organisations adopt AI-aware security frameworks capable of anticipating adversarial use of machine learning technologies.

Because accurate records can assist reconstruct entry pathways and reduce damage, CERT-In emphasised that log preservation will be crucial in reacting to increasingly sophisticated attacks.
