India Lifts Temporary Restrictions on Commercial Petrol and Diesel Sales Effective July 1

With the temporary limitations on retail sales of petrol and diesel to commercial consumers lifted by the Central Government, businesses, institutions and transport operators across the nation will be able to buy gasoline as usual starting July 1, 2026.

The government’s interim regulations put in place earlier this month to protect domestic gasoline supplies have been lifted, and commercial consumers can once again buy petrol and diesel from retail fuel stations without quantity restrictions, as per an order published on Monday.

Concerned about disruptions in global energy commerce and atypical fuel demand patterns, the Motor Spirit and High-Speed Diesel (Temporary Regulation of Supply through Retail Outlets) Order, 2026, which imposed the limits, went into effect on June 12, 2026. Industrial users, institutional customers, business institutions, and transport operators will no longer be restricted in the quantity of fuel and diesel they can purchase from retail outlets, since the temporary order has been withdrawn.

Businesses can get back to their regular filling schedules now that the previous daily limit of 200 gallons of diesel per customer or vehicle has been lifted.

Logistics operators, owners of commercial vehicles, industries, and users of bulk fuel, who were impacted by the interim limits, are likely to feel relief as a result of the ruling. The interim steps were put in place by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to forestall fuel hoarding, illegal selling and the diversion of diesel supplies from retail fuel outlets.

There was no shortage of petrol or diesel in the nation, the Ministry had said at the time; the limitations were only preventative.

According to officials, the directive was made to deal with some strange buying habits at various stores while yet making sure that fuel was available to everyone.

If necessary, the limitations might have stayed in place for a maximum of 90 days.
