India Showcases Labour Market Reforms and Social Security Expansion at ILO Geneva Summit

Indian delegates apprised international stakeholders of the country’s recent labour reforms, which have simplified labour laws, strengthened worker protections, and increased social security benefits for millions of workers in both organised and unorganised sectors. The government has stressed that these changes are helping the economy thrive while still protecting workers adequately.

Gig and platform workers make up a large portion of the informal economy, and throughout the discussions, India emphasised programs that aim to expand social security coverage to them. Government officials have taken note of the fact that e-Shram and similar internet platforms are compiling a large database of unorganised workers, which will improve their access to social programs, insurance, and jobs.

Labour reforms, according to the Indian delegation, aim to make it easier for businesses to operate, increase the number of people working in formal jobs, and make workplaces safer for everyone. According to officials, the goal of the revisions is to establish a fair system that helps businesses stay competitive while also taking care of their employees.

Universal social protection, skill development, and gender-inclusive employment are all areas that India has highlighted as being important to its government. Sustainable and inclusive growth are the overarching objectives of the country’s labour policies, which have been reaffirmed.

Future of work, platform economies, technological change, and workforce adaptation were among hot topics at the conference. Addressing these changing difficulties requires a concerted effort from governments, employers, and workers, according to India.

Indian officials have stressed that the country’s welfare programs and labour reforms show how serious they are about building a modern labour ecosystem that can sustain economic growth and workers’ rights to social security and dignity.

As the ILO’s top decision-making venue, the International Labour Conference gives member nations a chance to talk about things like social protections, employment policy, and labour standards. As part of its strategy for sustainable development, India reiterated its commitment to improving working conditions and increasing access to social security by attending the event.
