With the completion of 4,399 days in office, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the longest-serving elected prime minister in India to serve successive terms, marking a historic milestone. In recognition of the accomplishment, a resolution was approved by the Union Cabinet, which lauded his leadership and the nation’s progress during the previous twelve years.
Given the historical gravity of the occasion, the prime minister received a standing ovation from his cabinet colleagues as they offered their congratulations. With this achievement, Prime Minister Modi has broken the record set by Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, whose unprecedented term began in 1952 and continued for decades.
The time following India’s first general elections (from 1947 to 1952) is the only time that Nehru’s leadership of the interim government is not taken into account in the comparison. Narendra Modi is the longest continuously serving elected prime minister in independent India’s history, surpassing even Indira Gandhi, who served for almost 14 years overall, though her tenure was interrupted.
Prime Minister Modi became the first prime minister since Nehru to win three straight Lok Sabha elections when he took power in May 2014, following which he won again in 2019 and 2024. Reforms to the economy, new infrastructure, digital governance, welfare programs, and security measures have all been priorities of his administration.
A number of significant infrastructure projects have come to fruition and are now open to the public during the Modi government’s tenure. These include the new Parliament building, the redevelopment of Central Vista, the Kartavya Path, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link project, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), etc.
A big gathering is planned at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi to commemorate the end of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s 12 years in office. Leaders of alliance partners, chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from states and union territories ruled by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are all expected to attend the event.
A separate resolution thanking Prime Minister Modi for exceeding Jawaharlal Nehru’s milestone is reportedly scheduled to be adopted by the NDA. Governance successes, future policy goals, development programs, and getting ready for forthcoming political difficulties are all probable topics of discussion during the summit.
The festivities commemorating the government’s 12-year journey and the historic achievement of the prime minister are scheduled to be graced by the presence of senior Union ministers such as Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda, and Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
