The authorised project is a part of a larger plan to increase railway capacity nationwide through doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover and bypass works. While other portions of the Ernakulam–Turavur–Alappuzha–Ambalapuzha–Kayankulam corridor have been doubled or are being implementation, the Mararikulam–Alappuzha section is the sole remaining single-line piece.
The operational capacity of the route is expected to be greatly increased after the doubling project is completed. According to Indian Railways, the new line will allow nine more passenger trains per day in each direction, which will improve connectivity and alleviate congestion on a crucial railway corridor in Kerala.
Additionally, goods transportation will receive a significant boost from the project. Railway officials anticipate that the upgraded infrastructure would accommodate 2.88 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, which will boost logistics efficiency and bolster regional economies.
The doubling of the work is anticipated to decrease operating delays and train detention in addition to improving train capacity. Trains carrying both passengers and freight will be able to move more smoothly, which will increase reliability, decrease travel times, and improve punctuality.
The facility is expected to bring in an extra 3.08 crore in yearly net earnings from more passenger and freight traffic. With an extraordinary Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR) of 22.30% and a Financial Internal Rate of Return (FIRR) of 3.99%, the project has proven to be economically viable.
Indian Railways’ High Density Traffic Network Corridor initiative includes the Mararikulam-Alappuzha doubling project, which has been designated under Mission 3000 MT. Railway capacity expansion in high-demand locations and the development of transport infrastructure that can accommodate increasing passenger and freight demands are the primary goals of these programs.
The approval highlights the dedication of Indian Railways to upgrading their rail network, making operations more efficient, and enhancing connectivity among regions. The project is anticipated to enhance transport speeds, promote trade and tourism, and improve mobility for millions of people, all of which will contribute to the socio-economic growth of Kerala.
The ₹220.51 crore Mararikulam-Alappuzha doubling project has been approved, which is a major step forward in the development of Kerala Rail’s infrastructure. The project aims to improve passenger services, expand freight capacity, promote timeliness, and support regional economic growth by removing the final single-line bottleneck on an important Southern Railway route. When finished, it will be an important part in making the transport network in Kerala more efficient and improving rail connectivity.
