PM Surya Ghar Yojana Surpasses 40 Lakh Households, Boosting Rooftop Solar Adoption Across India

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi stated on Thursday that India’s main rooftop solar program, PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, has reached 40 lakh beneficiary families and is expected to reach more than 75 lakh households by December 2026.

At the ceremony called “Two Years of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Scaling the Solar Home to One Crore Rooftops,” the minister emphasised the scheme’s role in India’s clean energy transition and the fast increase in rooftop solar adoption. As per Joshi, there has been a remarkable increase in public engagement with the program, with over 65 lakh applications received from families nationwide.

Through the Utility-Linked Aggregation (ULA) approach, power utilities are playing a crucial role in speeding up the implementation of the approximately 30 lakh rooftop solar installations that the government has planned across several states.

Underserved homes, in particular, will benefit from the model’s simplification of installations and expansion of rooftop solar system availability. During a period when international energy markets are experiencing instability as a result of geopolitical events, such as the continuing crisis in West Asia, the minister stated that the program is assisting to fortify India’s energy resilience.

Increasing the production of renewable energy within the country, he said, improves energy security and lessens reliance on fossil fuel imports. In the future, when storage technology becomes more affordable, the government intends to incorporate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into the program.

As part of their efforts to build solar-powered communities in rural India, officials also plan to increase rooftop solar adoption through the Model Solar Village program.
