National Kharif Conference Sees 22 States Back Natural Farming Across India

On Saturday, the Centre announced that 22 state agriculture ministers had not only publicly supported natural farming but had also taken it up on their farms and experimented with it. This is part of a larger effort to boost farmers’ faith in sustainable farming methods.

During the two-day National Kharif Conference at PUSA’s New Delhi campus, the ministers gathered around a common goal: to fortify the agricultural sector via concerted effort and efficient execution. The importance of conserving farms was highlighted by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Union Minister of Agriculture, who said that doing so involves more than just defending farmland; it also involves defending the nation, the environment, and the next generation.

In order for farmers to have better access to and benefit from government programs and schemes, he firmly pushed state governments to streamline administrative processes and remove superfluous complexity. In response to concerns raised about chemical fertilisers, Chouhan made it clear that the government’s stance is not one of outright prohibition but rather one of encouraging their balanced, prudent, and scientific use. To get this word out to the people, he demanded an institutional campaign and a national awareness movement.

To make sure the campaign doesn’t just stay a policy appeal but actually produces demonstrable results on the ground, the minister emphasised the necessity to set up control rooms, specialised monitoring systems, and coordinated implementation methods.
