‘MAHA on Water’ Initiative Unveiled to Accelerate Water Research, Technology, and Innovation

The Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) have joined forces to establish ‘MAHA on Water,’ a program that would promote cutting-edge research and innovation in India’s water sector.

On Sunday, the program was unveiled with an emphasis on water-use efficiency, climate resilience, drinking water, and water resources management. On Monday in New Delhi, at the “National Workshop on R&D in Water,” the mission’s open call for research proposals will be revealed.

The workshop aims to enhance India’s water research ecosystem by convening members of various sectors, including government, industry, academia, scientific institutions, startups, and technical organisations. The goal is to expedite the development of innovative and environmentally friendly water management solutions, as stated by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Participants in the one-day event include Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, Minister of State for Jal Shakti, and Dr. V. Narayanan, Secretary of the Department of Space and Chairman of ISRO, who is also the Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology.

Another important statement is that the ministry would use the BHARAT-WIN platform to issue an open call for startups and micro, small, and medium companies (MSMEs). The goal of the program is to promote innovation and technology-led solutions in the water sector by funding product and prototype development.

‘Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari: Catch the Rain’ (JSJB), a participatory digital platform aimed at enhancing community-led water conservation initiatives, will also be launched at the event. Water conservation, rainwater harvesting, and groundwater recharge efforts can be documented and showcased on the platform by individuals, institutions, and local bodies.

In order to improve the assessment, monitoring, and management of water resources, the Ministry of Jal Shakti and ISRO are anticipated to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to leverage sophisticated technology and satellite-based applications. The prospective partnership has already identified 24 key topics and areas of cooperation, according to officials.

The workshop will cover a wide range of important topics in its technical sections, including but not limited to: groundwater management, irrigation techniques, river morphology, floodplain inundation mapping, ecological evaluations, climate resilience, and the safety of hydraulic infrastructure and dams.

All of these efforts highlight the government’s larger goal of bolstering water security via cooperative innovation, internet platforms, and scientific study.
