Indian Railways Expands Network With 200 New Intercity Trains From Kazipet

The Ministry of Railways announced on Thursday that the Kazipet rail manufacturing unit of Indian Railways is almost finished and would become a significant production hub for intercity trains. These trains will help improve short-distance connectivity and promote greener transportation.

The factory is set to produce 200 intercity trains in the next five years, greatly increasing the capacity of the railway for regional travel, according to the original rollout plan.

In a meeting with senior railway officials, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu examined the operationalisation plans for the Kazipet facility.

The trains made at this facility will run on short-distance intercity routes of about 300 km, making numerous stops to facilitate travel between neighbouring towns and cities.

The ministry claims that the services will help a wide variety of commuters, including workers, students, and those going to and from healthcare and other everyday requirements, by offering more efficient and reasonably priced transport options.

A large portion of the short-distance passenger traffic is currently being transferred from roads to railways, according to officials, and the new trains are being planned as rail-based shuttle services to facilitate this transition.

With a 20-coach layout, improved ventilation, and automatic door closing mechanisms, the planned trainsets will offer modern passenger amenities and superior engineering systems. Two restrooms, one at either end of each coach, will be provided.

The trains are being built to operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph and will have improved bogies and jerk-free couplers.

One important aspect of sustainability will be the regenerative braking system. This technology allows the energy that is generated when braking to be returned to the power grid, which improves energy efficiency and reduces carbon emissions in comparison to transportation that relies on roads.

An announcement from India’s Railways Ministry stated that the country’s ability to carry people and goods cleanly and environmentally would be enhanced by the introduction of such a massive intercity fleet, which would also aid in the greater movement toward sustainable mobility and rail-led regional connectivity.
