On Wednesday, the Centre announced the Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal and Lignite Gasification Projects, which will gasify 100 million tonnes (MT) of coal by 2030. The project is supported by a budget of Rs 37,500 crore.
By lowering reliance on imports of vital commodities like urea, ammonia, methanol, and LNG, the effort seeks to enhance India’s energy security.
On Thursday, a roadshow will be organized by India’s Ministry of Coal to promote coal gasification. The goal is to highlight coal gasification as a cleaner and more valuable way to use India’s coal and lignite resources.
Government officials, business moguls, investors, technological companies, and banks will all be in attendance at the event, which is part of a larger plan to speed up the creation of a domestic coal gasification ecosystem.
The government claims that 25 projects in coal-bearing regions will receive funding through the plan, which is anticipated to attract investments of around Rs 2.5-3 lakh crore.
In addition to increasing industrial activity associated with coal conversion technology, the program is anticipated to provide around 50,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.
In addition to increased revenues through GST and related levies, officials estimated that the scheme’s use of 75 MT of coal and lignite might earn approximately Rs 6,300 crore in revenue per annum.
The program expands upon previous coal gasification projects authorized in January 2024, totaling Rs 8,500 crore, and the National Coal Gasification Mission, which was initiated in 2021.
According to the ministry, eight projects that were awarded under the previous incentive framework are now being carried out with a total of Rs 6,233 crore.
To increase energy independence, diversify fuel sources, and create cleaner industrial feedstock options, the government sees coal gasification as a strategic strategy.
