On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Oslo for the 3rd India-Nordic Summit. During the summit, agenda items include deepening strategic partnerships between the two countries in the areas of renewable energy, trade, sustainability, defence, and technology.
Various Nordic leaders, including Prime Ministers Jonas Gahr Støre of Norway, Mette Frederiksen of Denmark, Petteri Orpo of Finland, Kristrun Frostadottir of Iceland, and Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, will be in attendance at the summit, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
This summit will further strengthen India’s alliance with the Nordic countries and builds on previous engagements between the two regions, which took place in Copenhagen in 2022 and Stockholm in 2018.
According to the MEA, the topics that will be covered during the discussions include technology and innovation, sustainability, the blue economy, defence cooperation, space, and engagement with the Arctic.
Prior to the summit, Modi went to the Norway-India Business and Research Summit in Oslo, highlighting the increasing economic cooperation between the two countries after the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) between India and EFTA was put into effect.
Several commercial agreements were signed during the business summit, which attracted over 250 representatives from the Indian and Norwegian business and research communities and over 50 companies.
During the fourth leg of his diplomatic tour, Modi touched down in Norway on Monday. Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre personally greeted him at the airport as a unique diplomatic gesture.
Kings Harald V and the Prime Minister met at Oslo’s Royal Palace during the prime minister’s visit. The two heads of state discussed ways to increase trade and investment between Norway and India, with a focus on new technology.
Modi emphasised the India-Norway relationship’s strengthening as a foundation for democratic values, rule of law, and people-centric governance, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
Following Modi’s visit, King Harald hosted a luncheon in his honour, and the prime minister thanked the monarch for his hospitality.
The Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, Norway’s highest civilian honour for foreign heads of state, was bestowed upon Modi earlier on Monday.
In his acceptance speech, Modi paid tribute to the Indian people and said that the award was a symbol of the long-lasting friendship and mutual dedication to world development between Norway and India.
The PMO states that this award is another landmark in the developing bilateral relationship and acknowledges exceptional service to Norway and humanity.
When the leaders of India and the Nordic nations come together for the India-Nordic Summit, they will likely further cement their cooperation in the areas of innovation, renewable energy, and robust economic partnerships.
