The government think tank NITI Aayog announced on Friday that economist and BJP MLA Ashok Kumar Lahiri had succeeded Suman Bery as Vice Chairman.
Economic policy, public finance, and institutional governance are areas in which Lahiri has deep expertise, having served as both Chief Economic Adviser and a member of the 15th Finance Commission. His knowledge would help India’s long-term development plan and improve evidence-based policymaking, according to NITI Aayog.
Early on, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Lahiri on his appointment, saying that he was certain Lahiri’s background in public policy and economics would help advance India’s reform agenda and the “Viksit Bharat” vision.
