India–New Zealand FTA to Expand Trade Opportunities and Strengthen Oceania Presence

Brickwork Ratings predicts that bilateral commerce between India and New Zealand will reach $5 billion over the next five years, solidifying India’s position as a pivotal entry point to the Oceania area, thanks to the free trade agreement between the two countries.

The agreement also plans to bring $20 billion in FDI to India over the next 15 years. Emerging technology and green energy are the long-term goals, but pharmaceuticals, agri-tech, and education are the near-term beneficiaries.

A watershed moment in the history of India-New Zealand trade relations was marked on April 27, 2026, by the signing of an agreement that removes all tariffs from Indian exports to New Zealand and opens 70% of India’s tariff lines to New Zealand goods.

By facilitating supply chain integration, the agreement is anticipated to boost industrial growth and production by providing access to New Zealand’s technology and essential raw commodities like coal, metal waste, and timber.

Depending on successful implementation and overcoming non-tariff obstacles, industry experts predict a robust development trajectory of about 30% CAGR if the 2031 trade target is met.

Faster entrance for Indian pharmaceutical exporters is made possible by the agreement’s simplification of regulatory processes, with New Zealand acknowledging Good Manufacturing Practice certifications from worldwide agencies.

The textile, leather, and engineering products industries are anticipated to experience a rise in cost competitiveness. Additionally, there is a possibility that higher capital inflows could promote currency stability and mitigate foreign exchange volatility in the medium to long run.
