As part of its initiative to enhance financial inclusion in rural India, India Post Payments Bank has introduced a zero-balance savings account specifically for Self Help Groups (SHGs), which allows for a maximum value of ₹2 lakh.
Implemented by the Department of Posts, the effort aims to offer SHGs a straightforward, easily accessible, and reasonably priced banking solution. These groups are vital to rural economic activity and are in line with initiatives like the National Rural Livelihoods Mission.
According to R. Viswesvaran, managing director and chief executive officer of IPPB, the product is an attempt to broaden access to banking for community organisations, especially those headed by women. To help SHGs become more integrated into the official financial environment, the bank intends to use its digital infrastructure and doorstep banking approach.
There is no minimum balance requirement, there are no fees for making deposits or withdrawals, and interest is paid out quarterly. As an added bonus, there are no costs associated with closing accounts or receiving monthly statements, making it an affordable option for group financial management.
With the help of India Post’s vast network of post offices, postmen, and Gramin Dak Sevaks, the digitally connected account streamlines the onboarding process and ensures last-mile connection.
The product is designed for financial operations at the SHG level and complies with regulations, with a maximum balance cap of ₹2 lakh.
More than 5.5 million rural and suburban areas are now served by IPPB, which uses a system of about 1.65 million post offices and more than 3 million postal workers. The new product line is in line with its larger mission of providing underbanked and unbanked people in India with paperless, cashless, and presence-less banking services.
