55,000 Km Track Renewal Boosts Safety and Speed Across Indian Railways

The rail network is now faster, safer, and more reliable thanks to nationwide track modernisation, according to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Thursday.

The PMO released a statement stating that the track renewal, automated maintenance, and the use of innovative testing procedures had greatly enhanced the ride quality, allowed for higher train speeds, and reduced delays, making for smoother travels overall.

A report by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw was referenced by the PMO. The report detailed the renewal of about 55,000 km of railway rails during 2014, which increased safety and decreased the frequency of maintenance.

Rail panels, measuring over 44,000 km in length, have been installed, the minister said, allowing for safer and smoother train operations by minimising the number of joints. More than 80,000 kilometres of tougher 60-kg rails are currently in operation, allowing for greater speeds and larger loads.

According to Vaishnaw, there has been a reduction in rail and weld failures by 90% and train speeds of 110 km/h or higher are handled by approximately 80% of the network. These enhancements are having a noticeable impact on both passenger and freight operations.

In addition, the number of track machines has grown substantially, going from 748 in 2014 to 1,785 in 2026. Tamping, ballast cleaning, and rail grinding are all necessary maintenance operations that these machines do more precisely and efficiently than humans.

The minister stressed the significance of high-quality rails, saying that problems like cracks, loose fittings, or clogged ballast impact reliability, safety, and speed on the train network.

He went on to say that approximately 1,37,000 km of rail line in India carries over 20 million people every day and loads of coal, iron ore, cereals, steel and cement, among other commodities.
