Samrat Choudhary Sworn In as Bihar’s First BJP CM, JD(U) Gets Two Deputy CMs

The formation of a government in Bihar dominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is a first in the state, and Samrat Choudhary’s swearing as the 24th Chief Minister signifies a significant political change.

At Lok Bhawan, the oath of office and secrecy was administered to Samrat Choudhary by Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain at the swearing-in event.

The partnership arrangement also saw the swearing-in of top JD(U) leaders Vijendra Prasad Yadav and Vijay Kumar Chaudhary as Deputy Chief Ministers shortly after.

An act that highlighted both Samrat Choudhary’s personal religion and the symbolic beginning of a new political chapter was his visit to a Hanuman temple in Rajvanshi Nagar, where he sought blessings before taking the oath.

The previous chief minister, Nitish Kumar, resigned and went to the Rajya Sabha, allowing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to assume power in the state.

For the first time in its history, Bihar is now directly led by the BJP in its administration.

Samrat Choudhary became involved in politics in 1990 and served as Bihar’s minister of agriculture from 1999 to 2000.

In both the 2000 and 2010 elections, Choudhary was elected as the representative for the Parbatta Assembly constituency.

He took over as the opposition’s chief whip in the Bihar legislature in 2010.

He has been a prominent figure in the BJP since 2018.

Since his appointment as BJP State Vice President in 2019 by Nityanand Rai, he has risen to prominence as a leading figure in Bihar for the party.

In the wake of Nitish Kumar’s decision to forge a Mahagathbandhan administration, Samrat Choudhary rose to prominence.

Choudhary, who was the Legislative Council’s Opposition Leader at the time, made a symbolic commitment to wear his traditional turban (the “Muraittha”) until Nitish Kumar was removed from office.

An important turning point in his political character was this act.

The appointment of Samrat Choudhary as BJP state president in 2023 further cemented his position as a prominent leader.

Choudhary became the first person from his party to hold the position of deputy chief minister and head of the home department after Nitish Kumar’s subsequent return to the NDA.

Political clout runs in Vijay Kumar Chaudhary’s family. He was born on January 8, 1957, in Samastipur.

He was exposed to the public eye at a young age by his father, Jagdish Prasad Chaudhary, a prominent political figure.

He got his master’s degree in history from Patna University and worked for the State Bank of India before diving headfirst into politics.

Starting from the Dalsinghsarai Assembly constituency, he went on to win three terms in a row as a member of the legislative assembly.

He had begun his political career with the Congress, but moving to JD(U) in 2005 was the turning point.

Among his many notable roles is that of party spokesperson and president of the state.

His impeccable reputation and steady hand in administration have made him an indispensable ally of Nitish Kumar.

His rise through the ranks of Bihar’s political hierarchy is bolstered by his appointment as Deputy Chief Minister.

A prominent player in Bihar politics, Vijendra Prasad Yadav is still influential at the age of 79. He is sometimes called the “Chanakya” of Kosi area politics.

He has established a strong foundation, especially in the Supaul Assembly constituency, and has been a perennial winner of elections since 1990.

Yadav has been an important ally of Nitish Kumar’s for a long time and a crucial administrator and strategist.

Everyone in the Kosi region looks up to him as a leader who prioritises growth. He has made substantial contributions to enhancing the power infrastructure in districts like as Supaul, Saharsa, and Madhepura.

The installation of new power substations and the extension of grid networks brought much-needed electricity to a region that had previously been severely underserved during his tenure as governor.
