India’s Energy Storage Capacity Poised for Big Leap by 2033

India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA) data shows that stationary energy storage in the country is expanding at a rapid pace, with 92 GWh of BESS projects in the pipeline, which is a record.

Installed storage capacity, which is currently below 1 GWh, may increase dramatically to 346 GWh by 2033 under the base scenario, and it might reach 544 GWh if policy momentum is strong, according to the paper.

With 69 new BESS tenders totalling 102 GWh granted last year, a 35% increase from 2024, the sector has witnessed a boom in activity.

Capacity for pumped hydro energy storage is anticipated to increase from 7 GW in 2025 to 107 GW by 2033, demonstrating a varied storage strategy, in addition to battery storage.

The managing of demand fluctuation in the electricity system is becoming increasingly crucial, according to S. C. Saxena, Chairman and Managing Director of GRID India. Adoption of large-scale energy storage is being accelerated by lowering costs and supportive regulations.

The roadmap is in line with India’s goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, according to Debmalya Sen, President of IESA. This highlights the need of storage as a means to integrate renewable energy sources.

Improvements in project viability and investor interest have been attributed to policy initiatives including energy storage commitments, viability gap funding, and regulatory support, which includes transmission charge waivers. These measures have contributed to growth, according to the research.

As a result of its energy storage sector, India is poised to become a leader in the global clean energy ecosystem, as it is scheduled to commission roughly 5 GWh of new capacity in 2026.
