A major push for infrastructure, connectivity, and economic growth in Northeast India was marked at Silchar, Assam, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and lay the foundation stone for numerous development projects worth ₹23,550 crore. Silchar is located in the Barak Valley region.
The Prime Minister, speaking to a massive audience, emphasised the importance of the Barak Valley as a development hub for the nation due to its cultural richness and economic promise. The Prime Minister emphasised the region’s strategic importance, saying that Northeast India has become the hub of India’s Act East Policy, linking the country to Southeast Asia.
Among the many benefits to the region’s economy, he highlighted the fact that the initiatives kicked off today will improve transportation, education, and workforce development. An access-controlled highway aimed at revolutionising regional connections, the ₹24,000 crore Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor was one of the main announcements.
Eventually, the corridor will connect the region to Southeast Asian markets, facilitating industry, agriculture, and tourism, and connecting Silchar with Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura. Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the growth of Assam and the efforts of its farmers and tea gardeners. According to him, the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi program has distributed more than ₹20,000 crore to farmers in Assam.
To further enhance agricultural research and encourage agri-startups among the youth of the area, the Prime Minister also announced the opening of the region’s first Agriculture College at Patharkandi.
