Indian Railways Boosts Safety with Kavach 4.0 Expansion

Rail safety has been greatly improved by Indian Railways’ commissioning of 472.3 route kilometres (RKms) of the Kavach Version 4.0 Automatic Train Protection System over three sections.

The newly listed sections are Vadodara–Virar (344 km), Tuglakabad–Palwal (35 km), and Manpur–Sarmatanr (93.3 km), signifying the greatest number of kilometres of Kavach commissioned in a single day and month. Kavach can automatically apply brakes when needed and uses microprocessors, GPS, and radio transmission to alert train operators to approaching trains.

With this extension, Kavach’s overall integration has increased from 834 RKms to over 1,306.3 RKms. This technique has proved vital for high-traffic routes, particularly boosting operational safety on the busy Delhi–Mumbai corridor.

The successful running of Train No. 13305 Sasaram Intercity Express on the Manpur–Sarmatanr stretch, including a head-on collision test, confirmed Kavach’s effectiveness.

Furthermore, Kavach installation is still proceeding on 4,235 RKms of the East Central Railway, and ongoing initiatives seek to increase speeds on important routes by 2026, thereby enhancing passenger confidence and rail safety.
