In partnership with IIT Delhi, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC), and Grid Controller of India Ltd., the Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Regulatory Affairs in the Power Sector was opened by Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal.
The CoE seeks to improve India’s regulatory capacities in the face of rising power consumption, the integration of renewable energy sources, and the use of digital technologies. It will address sectoral issues and advance efficient governance by acting as a national centre for regulatory research, capacity building, and information sharing. With an emphasis on the trilemma of affordability, sustainability, and efficiency in the electricity sector, the Centre will work closely with CERC and Grid India to enhance institutional capabilities and offer data-driven consulting to regulators. The CoE will support well-informed regulatory decisions that adjust to shifting energy landscapes as India moves towards clean energy and consumer-centric reforms.
IIT Delhi professor Rangan Banerjee was excited about the partnership with CERC and Grid India, emphasising the value of knowledge creation for a sustainable electrical industry.
Grid India’s S. C. Saxena pointed out that regulatory frameworks need to be in line with grid operations, while CERC Chairman Jishnu Barua stressed that sound regulation depends on data and analysis. Electricity Secretary Pankaj Agarwal commended the Centre for being essential to the growth of the electricity industry. In order to create strong regulatory frameworks for India’s changing power sector, the CoE will conduct multidisciplinary research in fields like market design, decarbonisation, and emerging technologies.
