President Murmu Administers Oath to New Chief Justice of India Surya Kant

President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice Surya Kant as the 53rd Chief Justice of India on November 24, starting his 14-month tenure.

Justice Kant succeeds Justice Bhushan R. Gavai, who retired after reaching the age of 65. Justice Kant, born on February 10, 1962, in Haryana, began practicing law in 1984 and served in various roles, including Advocate General of Haryana and Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court.

His primary focus as CJI will be to reduce case pendency in the Supreme Court and lower courts, with plans to form Constitution Benches and promote alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.

He acknowledged the potential role of AI in the judicial process while prioritizing human judgment in case decisions. Justice Kant’s appointment was officially confirmed by the Union Law and Justice Ministry, effective until February 9, 2027.
