Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has acquired Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited for about ₹18.98 crore. The acquisition gives POWERGRID 100% ownership of the project special purpose vehicle (SPV).
POWERGRID completed the acquisition on September 23, 2026. It emerged as the successful bidder for the project under the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) route.
The Barmer HVDC project will develop an inter-state transmission system to evacuate 6 GW of renewable power from Rajasthan. The system will connect Barmer-II in Rajasthan with South Kalamb in Maharashtra.
Barmer HVDC Project to Build 6 GW Transmission System
The project will include 6,000 MW ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II and South Kalamb. It will also include around 1,000 km of HVDC transmission line.
The transmission corridor will pass through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. The project also includes augmentation of the South Kalamb substation.
In Rajasthan, the scope includes 400 kV transmission lines and associated bays. Two SynCon units will also be installed at Barmer-II.
POWERGRID will develop the project on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis. The system will support the evacuation of renewable power from Rajasthan and its transfer to the western transmission network.
Acquisition Value and SPV Details
The acquisition value of around ₹18.98 crore includes 50,000 equity shares with a face value of ₹10 each. It also covers the assets and liabilities of the SPV as of the acquisition date.
The final acquisition price will be adjusted based on the audited accounts as of September 23, 2026.
Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited was incorporated on September 30, 2025 by REC Power Development and Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL).
The project will add another major renewable power transmission link between western India’s generation and consumption centres. Regulatory approvals from the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) remain part of the project process.
