The second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission focuses on building a broader domestic semiconductor ecosystem.
The programme aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported chips. It also seeks to strengthen local capabilities across manufacturing, assembly, testing, packaging, design and engineering.
Semiconductors are critical to several major industries. They power automobiles, smartphones, artificial intelligence systems and advanced computing equipment.
The global chip shortage during the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the risks of relying heavily on a limited number of semiconductor manufacturing hubs. India is now seeking to build greater domestic capacity and improve supply chain resilience.
12 Semiconductor Projects Approved Across Six States
India has approved 12 semiconductor projects across six states as part of its efforts to expand domestic chip capabilities.
Three companies have already started commercial production. Micron, Kaynes Semicon and CG Semi are primarily focused on assembly, testing and packaging operations.
Meanwhile, the Tata Electronics–Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation project in Dholera, Gujarat, is progressing towards its targeted first batch of chips.
These projects are expected to strengthen India’s semiconductor manufacturing base and create supporting opportunities across the electronics ecosystem.
India Targets Semiconductor Design and Engineering
India’s semiconductor strategy extends beyond manufacturing. The country is also seeking to build a stronger position in chip design, research and advanced engineering.
India has a large pool of engineers and technology professionals. This talent base could support the country’s expansion across different stages of the semiconductor value chain.
The strategy reflects a broader shift from “Make in India” towards “Engineer in India.” It aims to increase India’s role in semiconductor research, product development, chip design and engineering services.
