Keshav Chandra, a senior IAS officer, took over as Secretary of the Ministry of Mines on Monday, a major leadership change that comes as India speeds up reforms to fortify its mineral and mining sector. At the time of her appointment, the government is placing a premium on vital mineral security, exploration of resources, and sustainable mineral development. Chandra is an AGMUT cadre IAS officer from the 1995 batch.
Upon assuming leadership, Chandra immediately convened a review meeting to evaluate the development of the Ministry’s flagship programs with the participation of key officials. A number of flagship programs designed to increase domestic resource development and mineral availability were discussed, including mineral exploration, mineral block auctions and operationalisation, critical and strategic minerals, and others.
In order to promote industrial growth by making better use of natural resources, increase transparency in mining operations, and fortify India’s mineral ecosystem, officials gave information on ongoing projects in this area.
Efforts must be coordinated, and the initiatives of the Ministry must be implemented effectively, according to Keshav Chandra, who stressed this point at the meeting. If mining reforms are to result in expedited project completion and higher mineral production, he stressed, stakeholders must work together more closely.
According to India’s Ministry of Mines, these initiatives will help the country’s economy in the long run by increasing the supply of minerals needed for things like renewable energy, electronics, infrastructure, and high-tech production. In response to intensifying international competition for key minerals, the government is speeding up changes to fortify domestic supply chains and encourage ethical mining.
The appointment of Keshav Chandra as Secretary of the Ministry of Mines bodes well for the continuation of mining reforms, the enhancement of vital mineral development, and the fortification of India’s resource security in preparation for future economic expansion.
