Production in India’s electronics manufacturing industry has increased by a factor of about seven in the last decade, with employment reaching nearly 25 lakh, as reported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). This growth is evidence that the government’s Make in India program and other measures have been successful in their goal of making India a major player in the electronics manufacturing industry.
From an expected 1.90 lakh crore in 2014–15 to 13.11 lakh crore in 2025–26, electronics production has expanded substantially, according to MeitY. Electronics exports increased elevenfold, from Rs 38,263 crore to Rs 4.24 lakh crore, across the same time period. In FY26, exports of electronic items reached $47.96 billion, making them the third-largest export category for India.
One of the fastest-growing employment producers in the country, according to the ministry, is the sector. Nearly 12 lakh jobs are directly or indirectly supported by the mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem. Over 5.3 lakh jobs have been created by MeitY’s flagship schemes, with approximately 1.8 lakh employment being created under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing.
The development of India’s electronics manufacturing industry has been greatly influenced by women. Of all the jobs produced in the industry over the past decade, approximately 30% are in this category, and of those jobs directly related to mobile phone production, they make up about 70%. About 90,000 women have found jobs under the PLI Scheme alone, increasing the number of women working in formal manufacturing.
Hosur, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is one of the big industrial centers that has sprung up as a result of the fast expansion. Thousands of women work in the city to make electronic components and cellphones that are exported all over the world. Approximately 80,000 individuals are employed across three large production sites run by a prominent electronics corporation, with women making up almost 65% of the workforce.
Government officials have pointed to the PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing as a driving force in the sector’s evolution. This initiative has solidified India’s status as a global electronics manufacturing destination. As of March 31, 2026, it had attracted investments worth over Rs 20,600 crore, generated production worth over Rs 11.62 lakh crore, and supported exports surpassing Rs 6.53 lakh crore.
The electronics manufacturing sector in India has grown into an important part of the country’s economy, contributing to the creation of millions of employment, an increase in exports, and the consolidation of India’s position as a world leader in manufacturing and innovation thanks to programs like Make in India and PLI.
