Presenting the government’s strategy for the future of border security in India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke at the Superintendents of Police Conference-2026 in New Delhi. The conference was held in the Land Border Districts.
According to him, the conference has established a holistic method for managing borders and plans to shift its attention to coastal border security going forward.
As part of its Smart Border initiative, India is constructing a quadrangular security grid that includes border guarding forces, state governments, district administrations, national agencies, and local communities, according to Shah. He emphasised that the bedrock of national security is a wealthy border region, a vigilant society, and a secure border.
In order to improve its capacity for monitoring and response, the Modi government, according to the home minister, has quadrupled their spending in border infrastructure. He went on to say that India is moving away from having separate border outposts and toward a more interconnected security grid that can better handle new security threats as they arise.
While combating proxy wars, narcotics trafficking, smuggling, drone threats, cybercrime, organised crime, and radicalism, Shah emphasised internal security and the government’s commitment to making India infiltration-free. He was certain that, with the help of law enforcement agencies working together, the nation could severely undermine the drug trade within the next three years.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has referred to the country’s last village as its first village under the Vibrant Villages Programme, which the Home Minister also emphasised. In order to make border areas more resilient and economically dynamic, the program seeks to reduce migration, create jobs, and guarantee full implementation of assistance measures.
Shah went on to say that the government is going to spend ₹31,000 crore to build a fence along the 1,610 km border between India and Myanmar. He also mentioned the Demography Mission, which will look into population shifts, spot unusual patterns of growth, and suggest policies to deal with them. From the lowest levels of government to the highest, he stressed the significance of reporting demographic changes in a timely manner.
