Mahanagar Gas Partners with India Post for Home PNG Meter Reading Across Mumbai

In order to provide PNG gas meter reading services directly to customers’ homes in Mumbai, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has teamed up with India Post. By merging MGL’s digital infrastructure with India Post’s vast and reliable last-mile delivery network, the effort signifies a major stride towards enhancing customer service.
The deal specifies that the service will initially be tested in South Mumbai, and then gradually extended to other areas of the city. India Post will begin reading residential gas meters for MGL, making them the first Indian City Gas Distribution (CGD) firm to do so.

Members of the uniformed India Post staff will visit the homes of MGL customers to collect PNG gas meter readings using a specialised smartphone app. Accuracy, transparency, and real-time data processing will be enhanced with the addition of petrol meter photographs that will be securely communicated to MGL using an Application Programming Interface (API).

Improvements in consumer confidence and ease of use at home are further goals of the program. Home visits will be made by female India Post field staff wherever possible, and meter readings will only be done for verified consumer addresses given by MGL.

Managing Director Praveer Kumar Srivastava of MGL claims that the collaboration will improve operational efficiency and provide customers with a smooth experience. India Post expands its public service role beyond traditional postal operations with this collaboration, according to Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle.

Assuming the test runs well, MGL and India Post will evaluate the service’s efficacy in terms of precision, customer satisfaction, and operational efficiency. If everything goes well, the service will be expanded to other locations covered by MGL and Mumbai.
