NLC India-NALCO JV to Build 1,080 MW Captive Thermal Power Plant in Odisha

A coal-based captive thermal power plant with a capacity of 4×270 MW (1,080 MW) has been established at Angul, Odisha, by the historic Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) between NLC India Limited (NLCIL) and National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO). Two Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs) have joined forces to provide a dependable captive power supply to meet India’s increasing energy and industrial needs.

G. Kishan Reddy, India’s Union Minister for Coal and Mines, was present at the agreement’s signing, highlighting the government’s priority on enhancing cooperation across PSEs to quicken the pace of infrastructure development. Notable guests at the signing ceremony included high-ranking executives from NLC India, NALCO, the Ministry of Coal, and the Ministry of Mines.

With 50:50 ownership involvement, NLC India and NALCO will promote the newly created Joint Venture Company (JVC). To guarantee a consistent and uninterruptible supply of power for NALCO’s expansion project, the business will be in charge of planning, funding, building, owning, and running the 1,080 MW captive thermal power plant.

The project is anticipated to be essential in bolstering India’s aluminium industry, which relies on reliable power for optimal operations. The initiative will boost operational efficiency, increase energy reliability, and help India’s aluminium industry remain competitive in the long run by setting up dedicated captive generation capacity.

The partnership is a reflection of the government’s larger goals of energy independence, sustainable industrial development, and integrated resource development. We expect operational synergies and a stronger role for Central Public Sector Enterprises in driving national infrastructure development to result from combining NLC India’s knowledge of power generation with NALCO’s knowledge of aluminium production.
