In keeping with the worldwide “Our Power, Our Planet” initiative, Indian Railways has stepped up its sustainability efforts, drawing attention to significant advancements in electrification, water conservation, afforestation, and renewable energy as part of its strategy for a long-term green transformation.
The wide gauge network has nearly been fully electrified, with 99.6 percent coverage (69,873 route km), which is a major accomplishment since it drastically reduces the reliance on fuel. This change has reduced fuel usage by 178 crore litres in FY25 compared to FY17, reducing reliance on imports and exposure to global oil volatility.
Since 2014, the Railways have installed more than 3.66 lakh bio-toilets in passenger coaches, which is a significant improvement in sanitation. This has improved sanitation, safeguarded soil and groundwater, removed the need to directly discharge waste onto tracks, and improved the experience for passengers.
In fiscal year 26 alone, 81.59 lakh trees were planted as part of a statewide drive to increase tree cover. Reducing soil erosion, improving biodiversity, and increasing climate resilience by plantation around lines and stations also contributes to safer train infrastructure.
A major area of emphasis is water management. There have been 185 water recycling plants commissioned by the Railways since 2016–17, with 26 more added in the most recent fiscal year, and 8,313 rainfall collection structures constructed. Local ecosystems have also benefited from the restoration of 109 ponds and wetlands, which has helped with groundwater recharge.
With 909 MW of solar capacity and 103 MW of wind capacity now online, renewable energy adoption is picking up speed. By securing an extra 3,300 MW of renewable capacity, the Railways have improved energy sustainability and security in the long run.
The railway infrastructure has been outfitted with 100% LED lighting and has undergone substantial energy saving measures, which have helped to minimise power usage and have resulted in many national energy conservation awards.
By integrating these programs, Indian Railways is establishing itself as a frontrunner in sustainable transportation on a worldwide scale, bringing together massive infrastructure with ecological consciousness to provide safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation.
