61st Femina Miss India Showcases Indian Handloom to Global Audience

Indian handlooms are now part of a modern global design story thanks to a groundbreaking project by the Development Commissioner (Handlooms) of the Ministry of Textiles and the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). The project, “Vishwa Sutra – Weaves of India for the World,” showcases these traditional textiles.

At the Femina Miss India 2026 event in Bhubaneswar, the collection made its premiere, showcasing 30 unique handloom weaves from all around India, each inspired by a different country’s fashion. In an effort to increase worldwide appeal without sacrificing authenticity, the program combines traditional workmanship with global shapes.

By fusing Greek aesthetics with Odisha Ikat, Norwegian inspirations with Kanchipuram, Egyptian elements with Muga, Spanish trends with Patola, and UAE-inspired designs with Banarasi fabrics, this handpicked collection reimagines historic weaves while creating a blend of tradition and modern fashion.

The showcase, which was presented by 30 state winners in the first round, showcased the diversity and depth of handloom traditions in India. In line with the government’s “Gaon to Global” goal, M. Beena highlighted the sector’s importance in maintaining cultural identity, providing livelihoods, and encouraging women-led enterprise.

Sadhvi Satish Sail, who triumphed in the contest, exemplified the fusion of history and modernity by showcasing the Kunbi weaving in a modern Central European silhouette.

Transforming handlooms into globally competitive, design-led products while promoting cultural industries and sustaining lives is India’s larger goal under the 5F framework—Farm to Fibre to Factory to Fashion to Foreign—and the “Vocal for Local to Global” program.
