WhatsApp Expands Privacy Features with Global Username Reservations

A major privacy improvement that lets users interact without disclosing their phone numbers has been revealed by Meta, the owner of the popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp: the worldwide rollout of username reservations.

Before the feature is completely available in the app later this year, users can create and reserve a unique username, which started the bookings process on Monday.

Once WhatsApp username reservations are available, qualified users will receive an in-app message, according to WhatsApp. Among WhatsApp’s most notable privacy upgrades of late, the addition of usernames stands out.

To avoid disclosing private phone numbers, users can now simply share a distinct WhatsApp username, making it easier for friends, family, businesses, and communities to stay in touch.

According to WhatsApp, usernames are more of a privacy measure than a social media handle.

“Usernames allow you to communicate with others on WhatsApp without disclosing your actual phone number. The business assured users that their chosen handle would not be associated with any other platform. Additionally, a new “username key” is being introduced by WhatsApp, which adds an extra security measure to user accounts.

The option to need the username key before starting a discussion is available to users who want to make it so that anyone contacting them for the first time using their username must enter it.

User control over who can contact them is granted by the ability to alter the security key at any moment.

It is believed that this function will lessen the amount of unsolicited communications, spam, and efforts at impersonation. Users will have the option to modify or update their usernames immediately within the WhatsApp application, according to the company.

Users have the freedom to select distinct identifiers that may or may not correspond with their usernames on other social media sites, given that the primary purpose of usernames is to protect users’ privacy.

Reiterating that phone numbers are still safeguarded, the organization suggested using usernames instead to start discussions.
