UP and Maharashtra solar projects to receive Rs. 3,800 cr investment from GAIL

As part of its aim to expand its renewable energy portfolio, GAIL (India) Limited has green-lit a project of ₹3,800 crore to build 700 MW of solar generating capacity in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

At Jhansi’s TUSCO Solar Park, the business will install a 600 MW solar project that incorporates a 550 MWh BESS. Located in the Auraiya district, GAIL’s petrochemical plant at Pata will have its captive energy needs met by this project.

In addition, in the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district (formerly Aurangabad) in Maharashtra, GAIL intends to construct a 100 MW solar project accompanied by a 22 MWh BESS. The main source of power for the company’s PDH-PP plant at Usar, Raigad district, is this facility.

By incorporating battery storage devices, the intermittent nature of solar power can be mitigated, allowing for a more consistent and continuous source of renewable energy.

According to Deepak Gupta, GAIL’s chairman and managing director, the projects will increase the company’s installed renewable energy capacity from 147 MW to more than 1,000 MW once they are operational. The decision, he continued, is in line with the company’s long-term goals of achieving sustainable expansion while ensuring a steady supply of electricity.

This investment is in line with GAIL’s efforts to broaden its business interests, solidify its position as an integrated energy provider, and support India’s energy transformation and net-zero goals.
