“SMART DEVICES ARE NOT MAKING US SMART”, SAYS TANGEDCO CMD AT NEYVELI BOOK FAIR 2025

New Delhi, July 11: The seventh day of the Neyveli Book Fair 2025, continued to draw large crowds, further cementing the event’s success. The Fair grounds were bustling with energy as a large number of shcool children from nearby villages eagerly explored the vibrant stalls and displays, taking in the wide array of books and literary exhibits.

The daily literary programme was held in the evening at the Lignite Hall. The event was graced by Dr. J. Radhakrishnan, IAS, Chairman and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (TANGEDCO), who attended as the chief guest. Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD, NLC India Limited (NLCIL), presided over the function. Among the attendees were Samir Swarup, Director (HR), Senior officials of NLCIL, representatives of recognised Trade Unions, various Associations – including the SC/ST Welfare Federation, ST Welfare Federation, Graduate Engineers’ Association, Engineers’ Association, Women in Public Sector- as well as Teachers, Students and the general public.

J. Radhakrishnan, known for his commendable relief efforts during the 2004 Tsunami in Nagapattinam and Thanjavur and during the COVID 19 pandemic in 2019,praised NLC India Limited, describing it as a key power generation organisation. He noted that NLCIL’s afforestation initiatives have earned international recognition.

Congratulating the organisation for successfully hosting the Book Fair for the past 24 years, he remarked that it stands out among major book fairs in the country. He emphasised the role of reading and literature in promoting holistic societal development and expressed concern over the growing dependency on technology, stating, “Smart devices are not necessarily making us smart”. He encouraged students to cultivate the habit of reading, highlighting its benefits in enhancing focus, relieving stress and building knowledge and life skills.

Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD, NLCIL, in his Presidential address,  recalled how, historically, India was a global hub of education that attracted scholars from around the world. Prasanna Kumar Motupalli highlighted India’s long standing tradition in education, noting that the Union Minister, during the inauguration, had congratulated the NLCIL team for their consistent efforts in organising the Neyveli Book Fair for the past 24 years.

He proudly stated that the Neyveli Book Fair ranks amongst the most vibrant Book Fairs in the country. He pointed out the enthusiastic participation of students and teachers and emphasised that as India aspires to become a developmed Nation by 2047, knowledge will play a crucial role in acheiving that goal. Book Fairs, he said, serve as vital platforms for spreading knowledge and nurturing intellectual growth. He also expressed hope for continued support from TANGEDCO in furthering NLCIL’s initiatives in power generation.

The evening also featured a special moment as acclaimed writer S. Jayashree was honoured for  her outstanding contribution to literature. Additionally, Senbaga Pathippagam, a renowned publishing house based in Chennai, was recognised for its impactful work in the field of publishing.

Two books were released during the event: “Ulagai Vella Unnai Vel – Part 2: Vetriyin Ragasiyam” written by N. Hariramakrishnan and a book “Kalvi Aalumai Valarchi” authored by G. Udhayakumar.

The event began with a warm welcome with Anbuchelvan, Executive Director, Renewable Energy Power Plants (REPP), NLCIL. A.KR. Saravanabhavan, General Manager, Learning & Development Centre delivered the Vote of Thanks.

The cultural segment of the evening featured a mesmerising Bharatanatyam Fusion performance by Vignesh & Prakash from Sri Digambara Natya Kala Kendra, Chennai followed by an energetic Folk dance performance by a talented troupe of Folk Artistes from Madurai.
