In the aftermath of the devastating collapse within the Namchi district tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI hydropower project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang of Sikkim on Tuesday. The prime minister assured the state of all possible aid from the centre and assessed the ongoing rescue operation during the conversation.
The Sikkim government has reported that Prime Minister Modi has conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims of the incident at the Samardung at Jholungey tunnel, which is currently under construction. He has also expressed deep concern over the incident. He promised the state authorities that the federal government would do all it could to aid in the rescue efforts.
The state administration has been fortified by the assurance from the federal government, according to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for his timely action and unwavering support. Rescue teams are currently operating under difficult circumstances.
The district administration, Sikkim Police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), medic teams, local volunteers, and fire and emergency services are all working feverishly to complete the rescue operation. The operation has also included specialised rescue teams from Siliguri and Pakyong.
The Chief Minister has ordered all relevant departments to speed up their activities, help impacted families as much as possible, and keep safety as a top priority during the rescue endeavour, which he is overseeing closely.
While expressing deep sorrow over the loss of life, CM Tamang extended his condolences to the families of the workers who tragically lost their lives. He also assured them of the unwavering support of the state government. Additionally, he was grateful to the rescue workers for their professionalism and unwavering commitment during the challenging operation.
While rescue and recovery operations for the remaining trapped workers continue, officials have confirmed that seven workers have died in the tunnel collapse.
