PNG Adoption Gets Push From Centre
The Centre has asked States and Union Territories to speed up PNG adoption among households and support the shift from LPG to piped natural gas.
The Petroleum Ministry has sought district-level administrative support to drive the transition. It has asked States and UTs to appoint nodal officers who can coordinate with gas distributors and oil marketing companies.
The move comes after disruptions to India’s LPG supply chains during the West Asia crisis earlier this year.
PNG Adoption to Improve Household Fuel Access
Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal, in an August 21 letter to State Chief Secretaries, highlighted the role of PNG in India’s energy transition.
He described piped natural gas as a safer, cleaner and more efficient cooking fuel. Wider PNG adoption can also reduce the logistics burden linked to LPG distribution and improve convenience for consumers.
The government wants stronger coordination at the district level to support the expansion of PNG connections and make the transition more efficient.
District-Level Officers to Drive LPG-to-Gas Transition
The appointment of nodal officers is expected to improve coordination between State administrations, gas distributors and oil marketing companies.
These officers will help address local-level issues and support faster implementation of the LPG-to-PNG transition.
The district-level approach is aimed at creating stronger administrative support for expanding piped gas access among households.
