NTPC Patents Intelligent Electrical Breaker Access System for Safer and Smarter Maintenance

The granting of a patent for NTPC Limited’s revolutionary idea, “A Method and a System for Accessing Electrical Breaker Modules,” marks a significant step forward in innovation. This innovation, which the Indian government granted on June 15, 2026, under Patent No. 592308, is a huge step forward for digital maintenance management and electrical safety in power plants.

Accessing electrical breaker modules in switchgear systems is made easier with the help of the patented system’s intelligent and safe architecture. The solution improves operational reliability and maintenance efficiency by creating a comprehensive digital safety ecosystem that integrates seamlessly with SAP and Permit-to-Work (PTW) platforms.

The new innovation uses digital interlocking mechanisms, automated authorisation protocols, and multi-factor authentication to restrict access to specific breaker modules to authorised personnel only. It was developed by Sandeep Kumar, DGM, CC (Solar); Gnyanankur Sonowal, DGM (EMD) of NTPC Bongaigaon; and Ashutosh Kumar, Senior Manager (Operation) of Farakka.

Ensuring protection interlocks remain intact throughout maintenance activities, avoiding unauthorised access, and eliminating operational multiplicity and duplication are significant operational concerns that the technology addresses. A typical issue during complex maintenance processes in large power generation facilities is the possibility of isolating wrong electrical equipment. This risk is considerably reduced by using this method.

The proprietary solution reduces the likelihood of human mistake and increases compliance with maintenance protocols through the use of digital transformation, automation, and data-driven safety measures. Thanks to this invention, electrical systems are now more reliable and safer to operate with, which means that power generation operations can continue uninterrupted.

This patent is more proof of NTPC’s dedication to creating innovative products and services that benefit the local economy and industry. The company’s leadership in adopting smart solutions for power sector modernisation is reinforced by these developments, which are part of its drive toward digitalisation and operational excellence.

This accomplishment is in line with NTPC’s overarching goal of improving the dependability, efficiency, sustainability, and safety of its business operations. As India’s energy market changes, NTPC stays ahead of the curve by investing in research, innovation, and technology development. The company also supports India’s energy security goals.

Another major accomplishment for NTPC Limited, demonstrating their dedication to operational excellence, digital innovation, and workplace safety, is the grant of Patent No. 592308. Improving maintenance safety standards, lowering operational risks, and supporting the company’s long-term vision of technology-driven power generation and energy security are all goals that the patented smart electrical breaker access system is anticipated to accomplish.
